William Wyatt, Jr.
Ancestor of Frances Earl Boggs Speares

William Wyatt, Jr. was born January 22, 1742 at Maca, Prince William Co. Va.  He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War as a private.  He enlisted February 13, 1778 in Captain Henry Fauntleroy's Co. of the 5th Virginia Regiment and later transferred to Lt. Barley's Co.  In 1779 he again enlisted in Captain John Anderson's Co. in the 9th Virginia Regiment.

William Wyatt, Jr. was a Virginia planter.  He was a member of the vestry of the Episcopal Church in Dettingen Parish, Prince William Co. Va.

William Wyatt, Jr. was married twice.  His first wife was Frances Newton, daughter of William Newton and Mary Holloway of Stafford County, Virginia -- He was of the Westmoreland Co. Virginia, Newton line.

In 1788, William Wyatt, Jr. left Virginia and settled on Hogskin Creek, near the Anderson-Abbeville County, S.C. Line.  He attended "Old" Greenville Church in Abbeville Co., S.C.

William Wyatt, Jr. after four years in South Carolina (1788-1792) returned to Maca, his home in Prince William County, Virginia.  His first wife, Frances Newton, was deceased after 1780.  He had seven children by Frances Newton.  By 1789 he had married a second wife, Elizabeth Snoe and had five more children.

The children of Frances Newton were as follows:

  • Frances Newton, born December 23, 1767, married James Mattison and stayed in Abbeville, S.C.
  • Macajah Wyatt, born March 7, 1770 and settled in Halifax, Va
  • Lettice Nicoll Wyall, born July 25, 1771 married Nimrod Smith and settled first on Turkey Creek and later settled near Belton in Anderson County, S.C.  They had sixteen children.
  • Elijah Wyatt, my great, great, great grandfather, born February 2, 1774 married Mary Grigsby Foster of Virginia.  They settled near Broadmouth Baptist Church.  Since there was no Episcopal Church in the area, they joined this church and are buried at Broadmouth Church along with his sister Frances and her husband James Mattison.
  • William Wyatt, III, born February 16, 1776, married Martha Gaines and moved to Illinois.
  • Zadock Wyatt, born March 1, 1778, married Mary Commack.  They moved to Christian County, Kentucky.
  • Elizabeth Wyatt born January 1, 1980, married Noah English.  They returned to Prince William County, Virginia.
William Wyatt, Jr. was married the second time to Elizabeth Snoe.  By her he had five children as follows:
  • Tabitha Cumi Wyatt, Born October 29, 1790, married Henry Payne and they moved to Davies County, Virginia.
  • Malina Wyatt born February 24, 1793 married William Dunnington and lived in Virginia.
  • Mary Frances Wyatt June 5, 1795 married John Wyatt and moved to Kentucky.
  • Mahala Wyatt born Decembe 2, 1797 married James Rosser.
  • Malissa Wyatt born October 14, 1800 marred James Rosser's brother, John Rosser.  Both families moved to MIssouri.
A memorial marker for William Wyatt, Jr. and his family was unveiled at Old Greenville Presbyterian Church at the Reunion of the Wyatt family held there on June 15, 1952.
