The world in general and America in particular fell in love with sports during the 1920's. At the beginning of the decade, professional baseball saw it's first six figure trade. Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees by the Boston Red Sox for $125,000. Ruth was more popular than even the President and the fans loved him. The 1927 Yankees are still considered the greatest baseball team in the history of the sport.

Professional football was just getting started and former college football superstar Red Grainge attracted huge crowds to the games. Professional Walter Hagen and amateur Bobby Jones battled on the golf course. The one match that Jones and Hagen played was in Florida. Hagen delivered a very sound thrashing to Jones. But, Jones won all the Open Championships that both he and Hagen participated in. "Big Bill" Tilden and Helen Wills kept the population interested in tennis. Professional boxing was one of the fastest growing sports. Boxing matches between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey are legendary and the sport saw it's first $1,000,000 gate receipts during the 20's.
