The statistics below were compiled
from the individual soldiers' listings
in Samuel Bates, History of
the Pennsylvania Volunteers, written between 1869 and 1871.
The records Bates was working from
were incomplete. Nearly half of the regiment
is listed by Bates as "not accounted
for." Thus most of the numbers in this chart
are lower than the real numbers
would be. The numbers of dead
and wounded are fewer than listings
of casualties from individual battles. For instance, the
Official Records show that the
regiment sustained 111 casualties at Chancellorsville, while Bates
lists a total of only 63.
As another example, my own ancestor, Private Richard Gennett,
was wounded at Gettysburg
and stayed in hospitals for the duration of the war, but the fact of his
wound
is not reflected in Bates.
