The 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry

The Monument of the 115th Pennsylvania at Gettysburg

The monument was dedicated in 1889 with a speech by Captain A. Frank Seltzer

This is an unofficial  home page for the 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which served in the Civil War from 1862 until it was merged with the 110th Pennsylvania in 1864.  The places where the regiment fought included Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Cold Harbor.

Very little has been written about this regiment.  The main published sources of information can be found in the links below.

Pictures of the flags of the regiment have been posted.  To view, click here.

I am writing a brief history of the regiment.  The following chapters have been finished so far:

Chapter 1:    Raising A Regiment

Chapter 2:    To the Front (Training Camp to the Virginia Peninsula, summer of 1862)

Chapter 3:    Into Battle(The Second Battle of Bull Run, August 1862)

Chapter 4:   Washington, Fredericksburg, and Mud (September 1862 through the eve of Chancellorsville, April 1863;  added December 30, 2000)

Chapter 5:     Decimation (The Battle of Chancellorsville);  also see the  Chancellorsville Casualty List .

Chapter 6:    The 115th at Gettysburg (Photographs added, December 2000)

Also of interest is  The Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg, which shows the monument and lists members
of the 115th who were in the Battle of Gettysburg.

Chapter 7:    Moving toward Merger (Summer 1863 through spring 1864;  the shrunken regiment suffers for lack of strong command, and plans begin to be made to merge it with another unit;  added December 30, 2000)

My own ancestor in the 115th was Private Richard Gennett of Company K, pictured below.

He enlisted from Bridgeboro, New Jersey in April 1862, when he may have been as young as 14.  On the second day at Gettysburg he was severely wounded by a gunshot in the lower left leg and spent the rest of the war in various hospitals.  He lived with the effects of the wound for 71 years and died in 1934.
