What to look for in an association

1) Talk with other home schooling families.  (If you do not know any, attend one or more of your local  home school support group meetings. Ask them some of the same questions below, about the association or associations, which they have been members of; and

2) Contact each association and ask the following questions:

  • Ask if the association is a non-profit (e.g., 100% free membership,  501c3) or a business.

  • Does the association mandate more than the requirements of SC SEC 59-65-47?

  • How does the association handle contacts by public officials with their members? (e.g., Can you get your association on the phone, at the moment of contact by said official?  Does the association encourage the giving or give member information out voluntarily to officials, which have no warrant or written legal cause for said private information?)

  • Does the association do a record review, in the event their member is legally challenged? (In other words, does the association allow non- SC SEC 59-65-47 officials to hold the home school to a standard, which is beyond the law that the home school is operating under and in most cases I have seen, above the standards, which are not even being met in the public school system.)

  • Does the association have any legal council, which are fully versed in SC SC 59-65-47.  If so, what is track record of said legal council? (e.g., conviction, overturn, throw out or drop record, pertaining to the members of such legal cases.)

Each home school family is unique.  The needs of one family will be different from another.   Going with the flow may not always be the right direction.  What works for one may not work for another.  Research each association completely, before making this very important decision.

Just my 2 cents.  Tara
