                                      THE COMPASS

                                                ST. MICHAEL’S COUNCIL NO. 8980

                                                FEBRUARY 2003

IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR BISHOPS

K of C 8980 GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Here we are in February already.  We have moved into the second half of our Fraternal Year.  I believe our council has made progress in areas of meeting attendance and participation.  There also seems to be a growing optimism as some our new members and transferees begin to take part in our projects, socials and decision-making.

One area where we have to concentrate is increasing our recruitment efforts.  We now have an excellent First Degree Team and we should put them to work.  If you have a friend, neighbor or relative who qualifies to become a Knight, ask him.  Keep a Form 100 in your vehicle or on your person.  Don’t be shy about asking someone you see in church if he would like to become a Knight.  I would like to schedule a Degree for March if we can get candidates.

How can we make our Council better?  I’m sure many of you have ideas.  Let me or the other officers hear them.  If you have a criticism, voice it; but, better still, offer an alternative or solution.  We are here to work together for the betterment of our Church Community and Council.

As we get closer to spring, we will be busying ourselves preparing for a variety of activities.  Just a few things to be mindful of: St. Patrick’s Dinner/Dance, Fraternal Night, the beginning of our Operation Hope campaign, Mothers’ Day carnations, and the annual Flea Market.

On February 1, we will sponsor a Men’s Retreat directed by Msgr. Duffy.  We will begin with 8 am Mass and continue the program at PAC.  Coffee and donuts will be served.  Bring a friend and take part in this renewal prior to Lent.

At our February 6 Membership meeting, Joe Cannon, our Church Director, will show a brief video outlining “Disciples in Mission”.  This is an opportunity to find out more about the faith-sharing experiences of this program. Please make an effort to attend.

After our Rosary for the Unborn on February 20, Jack Brazukas will host our Fraternal Night.  Bring your spouse and learn more about the advantages of K of C Life Insurance, Annuities and Long-Term Insurance.  Jack’s program will commence after Rosary at about 7:45 pm.  Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Rick Millon (651-1524) is chairing this year’s Operation Hope (Tootsie Roll) drive.  He will be calling Captains and volunteers.  If you do nothing else this year, give a couple hours to this most worthy cause.  Remember, proceeds go to local schools for the exclusive use of the handicapped kids.

We need help for John Uggiano (447-6235) to run our annual Flea Market.  Give him a call and offer your services.  Historically, this has been our Council’s largest fund-raiser.  We are in danger of losing this source of revenue unless a dedicated group steps forward.

Our Scholarship Committee, headed by Marty Yuhasz (651-0981) is accepting application requests for deserving students.

Last, but certainly not least, Council 8980 wishes all of our ladies; wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, aunts – A Happy Valentines Day.

                    Vivat Jesus

                    Joe Wanovich

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNCIL CHAPLAIN

Dear Brother Knights:

In the January issue of Columbia magazine, there is an article entitled, "John XXIII:  Pope of World Peace".  As members of the Knights of Columbus, we would do well to prayerfully read this article.

In one insert, there is a quote from Pope John XXIII's encyclical Peace On Earth (issued 40 years ago this coming April).  He wrote:  "There can be no peace between men unless there is peace within each one of them unless, that is, each one builds up within himself the order wished by God."

If we wish to be a child of God, Jesus tells us, in the Sermon on the Mount, we must be peacemakers.  Pope John XXIII above reminds us that we can't be peacemakers unless we have the peace of Christ in our lives.  That's why St. Francis of Assissi prayed and encouraged all to pray for God's help to become instruments of God's peace.

In the article, we also have an insert quoting the challenge Pope Paul VI gave to the whole world (and that includes each one of us) in an address to the United  Nations  on  October 4, 1965.

He said:  "NO MORE WAR, never, never again.  It is peace, peace which must guide the destines of people and of all mankind."   There is another insert quoting Pope John Paul II when he addressed the United Nations thirty years later on October 5, 1995.  He said, "We must not be afraid of the future.  We must not be afraid of man.  It is no accident that we are here.  Each and every human person has been created in the 'image and likeness' of the One Who is the origin of all that is.  We have within us the capacities for wisdom and virtue.  With these gifts, and with the help of God's grace, we can build…a civilization worthy of the human person, a true culture of freedom."

Peace, not War.

Sincerely,

Text Box: IN MEMORIAM

Our Brother Knight John Ernest Karson of Kings James Court in Murrells Inlet, died on Sunday, December 22, 2002. John was an Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus and a Charter Member and Officer of Council 8980. Let us all pray for Charles and his family.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR INSURANCE AGENT:  AN ECONOMIC  MUST.

Do you have seat belts in your car?  Of course you do!  How many do you have?  Aren’t you certain that you have one for every member of your family?  Would you buy an automobile that only provided one ‘belt’ – that being for you?  But would you believe that family after family with whom I visit are running along with the one “belt” of insurance on the father.  Somehow, the common opinion seems to be that death will strike only the father – not the mother.  Today, insuring your wife’s life is an economic must.  With “wife insurance,” should death occur, you have a fighting chance to retain at least a semblance of a home for your children.  Call me today to discuss these needs.

                                                John Brazukas, 651-1009

BEREAVEMENT or SERIOUS ILLNESS

Any one having knowledge of the death or the serious illness of a Brother Knight or a member of his immediate family please notify John Giardino.  650-9837

Miscellaneous

Have we missed wishing you and your spouse a Happy Anniversary?  If we have missed you, it’s probably because we don’t have your anniversary date or your spouse’s name.  We have over one hundred members names without all the information we need.  If you would like your names to be included on the Congratulations page, call Bob Josefek, 651-5478 or Tony Mandile, 357-9337.
