- Math is an important part of our everyday lives.
By acquiring the necessary skills dealing with fractions, we can simplify
our lives. The purpose of this project is to help you understand fractions.
We are going to have fun with fractions. We are going to have a party and
invite all the 7th grade students, teachers, and principals to our party.
What is this party for you ask? To show off our fraction skills by cooking
pizza and brownies and by making some delicious punch.
- This webquest will allow your group to choose
a recipe, either a brownie, pizza, or punch, depending on which item your
group is assigned. Then your group will decide the amount that is needed
for the number of 7th grade students, teachers, and principals.

This WebQuest will help you master fractions by exploring and learning
using the Internet and other resources provided. You will be gathering and
applying knowledge learned from this WebQuest through activities that help
to sharpen your skills with fractions. It is my goal that by the end of this
WebQuest, you will have attained the knowledge to perform various tasks in
the area of fractions. It is also my goal to give you a sense of comfort and
confidence in tackling the multiplying, adding, subtracting and simplifying
of fractions. You will add and/or multiply the measurements in the recipe
that your group chooses in order to accommodate the number of 7th grade students,
teachers, and principals.
Objectives: You will practice and learn how to:
- add fractions when the denominators are the same
- add fractions when the denominators are different
- add fractions with whole and mixed numbers
- multiply the numerators of the fractions
- multiply the denominators of the fraction
- place the product of the numerator over the product
of the denominator
- reduce fractions/simply
- practice fractions to reinforce what you have learned by
using the resources provided
- edit a recipe that your group chooses to accommodate 7th
grade students, teachers, and principals

Step one
: Click on the "fraction lesson", scroll down to "Adding Fractions when
the Denominators are the same". Once you have thoroughly reviewed this lesson,
see me for Worksheet 1-1. Once we have reviewed the worksheet together, then
you can proceed to the next step.
Step two
: Then, hit the back icon at the top of the screen, scroll down and choose
"Subtracting Fractions when the Denominators are the same". Once you have
thoroughly reviewed this lesson, see me for Worksheet 1-2. Then we will reviewed
the results of the worksheet and you can proceed to step three.
Step three
: Hit the back icon at the top of the screen, scroll down and choose "Adding
and Subtracting Fractions when the Denominators are Different". This time,
write out the steps and show me how to add and subtract fractions with different
denominators. Then proceed to step four.
Step four
: Again, hit the back icon at the top of the screen, scroll
down and choose "Multiplying Fractions". This one is easy but make sure you
show me how to multiply fractions before going on to step five.
Step five
: Hit the back icon at the top of the screen, scroll down and choose,
Multiplying Fractions with Whole and Mixed Numbers". Prove to me that you
can multiply fractions with whole and mixed numbers and you are on your way
to the last step.
Step
six: Hit the back icon at the
top of the screen, scroll down and choose, "Reducing/Simplifying Fractions".
Once you have finished all six steps, see me for a final review and grade.
Then you are on your way to "Pumpkin Pie For All!.

Step two: Decide the amount
to be made by your group to accomodate the 7th grade students, parents and
principals.
Step three: Study the
recipe ingredients to determine how the measurements are to be changed
to produce the specific amount needed.
Step four: Change the
measurements using excel spreadsheet. See microsoft tutorial below. Be sure
to create formulas so the measurements are converted and correct. Turn
in the orginal recipe and the Excel Worksheet showing the modified recipe.
This is the same assignment that you will find below.
- Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/education/tutorial/
. This is a site where you can find a tutorial for Excel. Once at this
