South Brooks Street in Manning was once a street measuring over 75
feet in width. This allowed for trees to shade the center of the street
with plenty of room for horses, buggies, and eventually automobiles. This
was a time when the iceman would yell to the ladies of the houses from
the back of his wagon while the faithful horse continued on the route.
Meanwhile the children would run behind to catch chunks of ice on hot
summer days.

Do you recognize these students? This picture was taken outside of the Old
Manning High School, about 1953/4. With the assistance of Jane
Stogner Thompson in Kentucky and Johanna Jackson Jones of Home Branch area,
we identified the people in this photo.
From left to right are Jack Hodge, Cean Carter, John Franklin Thames, Edna DuRant,
Travis Brown, Dorothy Ropp, Margie Means, "Brother" Carter,
Peggy Elaine Stogner, and Fred Spigner. Thanks so much for the help.
