Old Postcard Tells Stories

South Brooks St South Brooks Street in Manning was once a street measuring over 75 feet in width. This allowed for trees to shade the center of the street with plenty of room for horses, buggies, and eventually automobiles. This was a time when the iceman would yell to the ladies of the houses from the back of his wagon while the faithful horse continued on the route. Meanwhile the children would run behind to catch chunks of ice on hot summer days.

Carolina Project - Parks

park project Between 1951 and 1955 quite a bit of renovation took place around Clarendon County. The picture below is of just one of many projects citizens took part in to give the area a new and fresh look. Small parking points were set up along the highway with picnic benches and painted tree trunks to make them easier to spot. In this photo a girl scout troop helps with the painting of the tree trunks. Do you recognize any of the young girls or were you part of one of these projects. One of the ladies pictured is believed to be Mrs. Frances McCord. If you remember this outing let us hear your story and what other projects you were involved in.
