Many of you know I was Opie 'Possum for WCOS Radio.
As you can imagine, Opie has had many adventures and has many tales to
tell. A six foot 'possum does seem to stand out. This tale is told
through the eyes of a 'possum. We were doing a radio remote at a
business across the street from a very busy mall on a Saturday afternoon
a week before Christmas. Opie was on the side of the road wearing
a Santa hat and waving to the cars as they passed. Picture this.
Four lanes of traffic, thousands of cars speeding past honking their horns
at a six foot Santa 'possum. You just know there is a story here.
Opie is always very careful and watches the traffic closely.
Cars and 'possums don't mix! Cars are speeding by when I noticed
two women(no offense to women drivers here but they were women) driving
past at a high rate of speed. All of a sudden the car does a 180
degree turn in the middle of the road and heads straight for Opie (me!).
All the other cars are honking and giving the universal hand signal to
this car as it crossed three lanes of traffic. At the last possible
moment the woman turns the wheel and slams on the brakes as she pulls in
front of me on the curb.
My heart is beating 90 miles an hour when the car stops
just inches from my toes. The passenger rolls down the window, looks
at me and asks; "Do you know where the Olive Garden is?" I am in
shock and speechless. Of course, 'possums can't talk anyway.
All I can do is point. I stretch my arm out and point to the right.
The lady thanks me and drives off.
I could only imagine the conversation these two ladies
must have had just moments before. "I bet if we could find a six foot 'possum,
he could tell us where the Olive Garden is. Hey! There's one over
there. Let's ask him."
Drive carefully and remember, if you are ever lost, just look for a
six foot 'possum.
