Best Friend

I was on my way to the dentist this morning and as usual I was running just a little behind.  On my way through downtown Columbia I was stopped at a traffic light .  Waiting for the light to change I noticed a young man walking down the street lead by a Seeing Eye Dog.  My first thought was how horrible it must be to be blind.
I watched as they maneuvered their way past a construction site and headed for a busy intersection. I was in a hurry but something held me there.  How could they cross safely?  I know how difficult it is to do when you can see perfectly.  You have to look six different ways and then proceed with caution.  I pulled over to the side to watch.
As they approached the intersection they stopped.  The man reached up to touch the street sign on the corner.  The signs are not in braille but he must have been able to read the sign from raised lettering.  I watched as the lights changed and just at the right moment the dog lead him from the curb.  Just as they stepped fom the curb and took a few steps a car rounded the corner.  I watched as the dog stepped in front of the man to stop him and prevent him from being struck by the car.  I was amazed.
When the intersection was clear, the pair crossed safely.  When they reached the other side, the man knelt down petted and hugged the dog.  How do you thank a friend that has just saved your life? When I drove away I did not feel sorry for the man as I had before but thought how lucky he was to have such a friend.  I hope you also have a friend that looks after you.  If so, give them a big hug.
